Oddness in the GANS factory

  • So, what's new? I had really odd results with my last GANS system. The output was not anything I expected. The first picture is the iron, the second is the copper and the third is the zinc... The crusties on the top are pretty solid and seem like dried paint. I'm not going to toss this out, but once I get some small canning jars, will be transferring the goop into storage. It may have a use, but right now I can't imagine what.

So I reset and started again...

Here is the copper oxide setup... It is from a discussion I had with some folks about two weeks ago. The tubing is 1/4 inch nano-coated inside a 3/4 inch plain. the inner tube is hanging on a nano-coated wire that passes through both tubes. The copper is only to hang the assembly neatly on the cup.

After 10 minutes, I already started to see CuO GANS forming... You have to look close, but you can see the GANS flowing out of the bottom of the large tube.

This is very encouraging, as CuO GANS was the slowest of the big three with conventional plate setups. Now it appears to be the fastest. The other two, Iron first and then Zinc, haven't shown activity as quickly...

But so far, as of about 10 hours after setup, I'm not gotting the nasty results of the last batch. I expect it was the copper scrubbies being contaminated with something that did the strange result. The setup was:

Cheapo dollar store copper scrubbies, not steel coated, but actual copper...
    8% salt in distilled water
Nano-coated copper wire for plate connections with an LED (same as the fresh setup) between the two wires...
Fairly cool temps... My house doesn't get much over 60 deg F...
Slight sunshine at the end of the day, as they are sitting on a northwest windowsill in the Kitchen.

New setup is 12.5% salt and copper from brand new water pipe that was split and flattened. Other than that and the shape of the container, all else is the same.

Let's see if I get the usual results and useful GANS this time.

Edie Lee Could it be that your copper was enamel covered? I ran into the problem that the other day and found out first only when I tried to Nano coat and the copper started to burn. I discovered on the back of the package a small note saying that the copper was e...  more
